The Main Street Advisory Board is excited about a new grant awarded to downtown Elkin!  With our Main Street being on the NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail, they wanted to set a good example for the environment and support recycling efforts along Main Street.

With a grant provided by the NC Dept. of Environmental Quality, they are able to purchase 7 new recycling trash bins for Main Street & Market St, where most pedestrian traffic is.  The board contributed $1,488.00 of MSD funding to support the project for these improvements.

Remember when in downtown, to use the new recycle bins for plastics and aluminum cans.  The aluminum cans we gather will be transported to the EHS Elementary School and be added to their recycle bin to help raise money for their school, as well.

December 21, 2022-

The Town of Elkin is excited to announce that we are a recipient of the 2nd phase of the Rural Transformation Grant Funds. The program's choices were announced in December 2022.  Elkin was awarded $800,000 towards improvements to support Downtown Revitalization to help retain businesses and attract customers to the historic business district with downtown economic development initiatives.

Elkin plans to use these funds for the Yadkin Valley Heritage & Trails Center grounds along Standard St, to create a space that will become a regional attraction for future outdoor events. Plans include adding amphitheaters, a concession area, and additional lighting for the east lawn.

We are thankful for the opportunity provided by the NC Department of Commerce, Rural Economic Development Division (REDD) and their Rural Engagement and Investment (RE&I) Program.  Project will begin some time in 2023.  To learn more, click here.

The Town of Elkin was recently awarded a grant from the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.  The grant will fund additional awnings along  the perimeter of the farmers market shelter expanding coverage under roof, and helping to shade vendors and their produce during extreme heat and sun exposure during summer months. The awnings will also shade the west side of the shelter for evening events, as well as protect attendees from inclement weather.  Look for the project to be completed in time for the 2021 farmers market season, which begins mid-April.

April 23, 2020 -

Elkin was recently selected as one of three NC Main Street communities to participate in the Main Street America Façade Improvement Grant Program made possible by a $746,900 grant from the Historic Revitalization Subgrant Program, administered by the National Park Service Department of Interior. The Main Street Facade Improvement Grant Program will significantly expand the funds available for façade improvements in rural communities. In each of the four states selected, three Main Street community partners will receive grants for façade improvements in their downtown districts. It’s an honor for North Carolina and our town to be selected to participate in this program on a state and national level. The grants will be administered by Main Street America, who will work directly with the local property owners selected to receive the grants. Each town has a total of $46,000 available for future “shovel ready” improvements of contributing (or eligible to be contributing) properties listed on the Downtown Elkin Historic Register. Elkin’s Main Street Advisory Board will assist in the application process for the grants available between $5,000 and $25,000. A five-year preservation agreement is required for any grant less than $10,001; a five-year covenant agreement is required for grants $10,001 or above. The grants are designed for historic façade rehabilitation improvements, not for deferred general repair/maintenance-type work, and is intended for larger-scale projects costing over $7,500.00. Front facades are preferred unless the issues involve public safety or structural soundness. Visit our Main Street page under “grants” for information or contact Laura Gaylord, Main Street & Community Manager, at 336-258-8908 and/or email communitymanager@elkinnc.org.

March 2018: Elkin's downtown was the location for NC MST's Annual Conference, which brought hundreds of visitors from all over the state and from places across the country.  The Elkin Valley Trails Association volunteers planned numerous events to experience in Elkin  and the region during the 3-day weekend each year.  The event was held in the beautiful Liberty banquet hall both times.  Elkin's Main Street is directly along the NC MST and downtown will soon offer amenities for MST hikers in their visitor center.
