Elkin is a member of the NC Main Street Program* and the downtown, as well as some adjoining residential neighborhoods, are registered as historical districts on the National Register of Historic Places. For historical information on Elkin's buildings, please contact Elkin's Main Street & Community Manager or visit the Facade Grant/Historic Resources page on this website.
Buildings in downtown Elkin are included in a Municipal Service District (MSD), which provides funding for the Main Street Advisory Board to allocate improvements in the downtown. All building owners in the MSD pay a small tax of 10 cents per $100.00 in assessed building value, which is then reinvested back into the district. To see some recent projects in downtown, please click here. There is an MSD boundary map below.
Downtown Elkin, bordered by two rivers (Big Elkin Creek and the Yadkin River), offers kayaking and hiking trails (the Overmountain Victory Trail, Daniel Boone Trail, NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail, and the Yadkin River Blue Trail) and is included in Surry County's Scenic Bikeway Trail route. The Yadkin Valley Scenic Byway route begins in downtown Elkin, as well. You'll find various maps below, but you can also check the Elkin Valley Trails Association website, which updates their trail maps often. Click here for printer-friendly maps.
At the far east end of Main Street, is the Chatham Manufacturing Plant property. The Town of Elkin is looking for interested developers for this large mill property, where numerous buildings would be a good fit for downtown apartments/lofts, satellite college campus, retirement village, production studios, artist or maker spaces, or viticulture related business ventures, to name a few. If interested, please contact Leslie Schlender, the Town of Elkin's Economic Development Director.
