1) Utility maintenance worker for Public Works
Class Title: Utility Maintenance Worker-Water
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Salary: Utility Maintenance Worker $29,387
Purpose of Class: Under supervision of the Utility Maintenance Supervisor, the purpose of this position is to perform manual labor in a variety of construction, repair, and maintenance assignments.
Primary Tasks: Any one position may not include all of the tasks listed, nor do the examples necessarily include all of the tasks performed. The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.
- Performs semi-skilled manual labor.
- Responsible for maintaining and repairing water systems and grounds.
- Drives equipment to and from maintenance sites.
- Operates dump truck, tractor with bush hog, fork lift, air compressor, backhoe, lawn mower, and sewer jet.
- Performs general maintenance work and daily preventive maintenance on trucks and equipment.
- Sets up work zone safety.
- Installs and repairs water valves.
- Assists in leak detection.
- Maintains and repairs fire hydrants.
- Performs general maintenance of water plant.
- Installs oversized meters.
- Repairs and maintains water booster stations.
- Installs new water taps.
- Installs and repairs leaks of water mains.
- Performs other duties as may be prescribed by the Utility Maintenance Supervisor.
Equipment operated: Backhoe, air compressor, dump truck, utility truck, all tractors.\Reporting Relationship: This position reports to the Utility Maintenance Supervisor.
Working Conditions: Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Qualifications of Class:
Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience: Supplemented by one to two years previous experience and/or training involving water or sewer system maintenance, and or grounds keeping; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of safety hazards.
- Knowledge of locating water lines.
- Ability to use leak detection equipment.
- Ability to communicate with the public.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Special Requirements: Must be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds for an extended period of time. Must possess a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License.
